Ellen has been
a part of the Salem School Department for over 25 years. She started her
career at the old Bowditch School as a Title I teacher. When the original
Middle School West opened, she continued to teach both math and reading to
grades 7 and 8. In 1984, she
initiated a Title I program at Salem High school and spent 10 years there
teaching math to the freshman students. In 1994, she returned to her favorite
age group, the middle school! Here she taught both math and science in grade
8. During her years in the
classroom she was always curious about how students learn –
particularly mathematics – and the ways in which they learn. Her
educational background includes a Bachelor of Science in Education from Salem
State College with a focus on mathematics and a Masters of Education from
Cambridge College. She continues
to broaden her knowledge of both content and pedagogy by participating in
graduate level courses. Ellen brings
her expertise in many areas to the curriculum coordinators’ office and
much enjoys working with the different grade levels although she misses the
trials and challenges of the classroom.
She has been an advisor for the eighth grade yearbook for many years
and is a facilitator for the Mathematics Learning Community here at Collins. Ellen can be
